About Me

A Clean House Is a Healthy House

My mother always kept a very clean house, so when she began neglecting her house cleaning, I knew something was wrong. She told me that her arthritis was making it tough for her to clean, but that she "didn't care" and that she would just "live with the dirt." I offered to clean her house many times, but she always told me no and that the dirt didn't bother her. When I noticed her sneezing from the dust in her home one day, I decided to research the health effects of a dirty house and print it all off to show her. After I left the papers with her overnight, she then let me hire a cleaning service to clean her house! I know there are others out there in a similar situation, so I want to share my research and cleaning tips with anyone who needs them!

A New Homeowner's Guide To Removing Mold From An Empty Home

Shopping for a home can be incredibly exciting. The only problem is, if you run across a home that has been closed up for a while and any moisture has been allowed to sit idle inside, there is a good chance that you will find various mold types growing. This is especially true in homes that have basements or are a bit outdated. Even though you may see evidence of small amounts of mold and smell a peculiar odor in the air, all is not lost if you think you have found the home of your dreams. You can easily remove a lot of common molds from the interior of a home with a little instruction and a lot of diligence.

Track Down the Mold Growth

This part of the process should not be that difficult to achieve. If moisture has been allowed to encourage mold growth in a home that has sat empty for a while, it will usually show up in most of the common places. Mold commonly grows on porous materials, such as wood, concrete, and carpet. Therefore, you should do a thorough visible inspection of the home in all of the areas that may boast these materials and excess moisture. Additionally, you should check dark corners where sunlight does not reach, such as in the basement, in vents, or inside closet areas.

Gather Your Mold Cleaning Supplies

Cleaning mold will take several precise materials, some of which are used for cleaning and eliminating the mold, and others that are used as a form of personal protection. Before you get started you will need:

  • Rubber Gloves
  • Respiration Mask
  • Stiff and Soft Bristled Scrub Brushes
  • Mold Removing Cleaner
  • Dry Disposable Cotton Cloths
  • Mobile Heat Source, Such as a Space Heater or Blow Dryer

Removing the Mold

Before getting started, go ahead and put on the appropriate protective gear, like gloves and a face mask, and you should check to make sure that the mold removal product you are using will not stain or discolor the surface of whatever it is that you are cleaning, such as cabinets or carpeting. Generously spray the mold-covered area with the cleaner per the manufacturer's instructions and allow the solution to soak in for a few minutes. Scrub gently with a brush to eliminate any stubborn mold growth, and then wipe away the residue with a clean dry cloth. If the area is left damp because it is cloth, such as would be the case with carpet, use heat to quickly dry the space.

If you are careful, you can remove most common mold growth from a home. However, if you do not remove all of the mold particles, the problem can just as easily spread to other locations in your home. If you would like help with removing mold from a home that you plan to move into, it is always a good idea to trust a professional mold removal company for help or advice.
